A day workshop 10-4pm in the surroundings of one of Scotland’s oldest inhabited castles, the workshop is limited to 12 attendees there are four parts to the day with opportunities for groups of 4 to work with the handlers taking portraits, action shots and in-flight where you can try to capture the fastest raptor on the wing.

Birds are supplied by Rhuallan Raptors and will be the handlers on the day giving their expert advice on the birds.

Sessions

10:00 Meet the team, the birds with teas / coffees.

10:15  Group tuition and safety briefing.

  • We start by introducing you to the team of birds on their perches, identifying the different species.
  • Introduction into photographing the birds, how to gain the best photographs.

10:30 Practical session – Static portrait photograph various birds of prey perched in natural settings in the castle grounds.

Birds in the display typically include;

  • Red Tailed Hawk – Buteo jamaicensis
  • European Kestrel – Falco tinnunculus
  • African Spotted Eagle Owl – Bubo africanus
  • Peregrine – Falco peregrinus
  • Gyr/Peregrine x Saker – Falco rusticolus/peregrinus x Falco cherug
  • Snowy Owl – Bubo scandiacus
  • Golden eagle –  Aquila chrysaetos
  • Goldie x Steppe Eagle – Aquila chrysaetos x Aquila nipalensis
  • Barn Owl – Tyto alba
  • European eagle Owl – Bubo bubo

(Birds may change on the day depending on availability and weather)

12:30 Lunch

13:15 Practical session – Birds in their surroundings, using trees and gateposts etc as perches for natural looking shots.

14:00 Tutor session – photographing birds on the wing, camera settings and techniques.

14:30 Practical session – in flight action and flying display that will be tailored for our photographers and flying shots.

  • Black Kite – Milvus migrans
  • Snowy Owl – Bubo scandiacus
  • African Spotted Eagle Owl – Bubo africanus
  • Peregrine – Falco peregrinus
  • Red Tailed Hawk – Buteo jamaicensis
  • European Kestrel – Falco tinnunculus

15:15 After the display we relocate to photography area to carry on with more static photography.

Finish approx. 16:00

Professional Photographer William Wilson (BA Photography) will be hosting this workshop. Tuition throughout the day to give you all the help you need to get great shots.

We will photograph a range of birds of prey from the Rhuallan Raptors falconry collection

You’ll get the most from the day if you have a DSLR and a variety of lenses including a zoom.

Unfortunately due to the nature of the day we cannot allow spectators close to the birds being photographed.
